Experience the majesty
of Mendenhall Glacier
Arguably one of the most beautiful capital cities in the United States, Juneau sits
pretty inside the Tongass National Forest, part of the world's largest temperate
rain forest. Snowcapped mountains and old-growth groves add to the natural
splendor. Whales and marine wildlife abound, and several outfitters offer trips
from Auke Bay. For a quick and easy hike, head to the Switzer Creek and Richard
Marriott Trails (the trailhead is midway on Sunset Street). At the Alaska State
Museum, learn about the state's history as a Russian colony and its subsequent
Fresh-caught fish plays a key role on Juneau menus. Try local salmon, halibut,
and king crab at the Hangar on the Wharf pub and grill, while oohing and aahing
over views of Gastineau Channel and the mountains of Douglas Island. For a
more low-key experience, grab a pint of Alaskan Amber (brewed in Juneau) at the
Triangle Club, a delightful dive filled with local color and characters.
If you want a super-local souvenir, swing by Western Auto-Marine for a pair of
brown rubber XtraTuf boots, a mainstay in Alaskan wardrobes. Swing by the
Juneau Artists Gallery for prints, jewelry, and pottery.
Our Virtuoso shore experience includes a visit to the blue-hued Mendenhall
Glacier, one of Mother Nature's most amazing treasures, followed by a walking
and tasting tour.
