Virtuoso Life - November/December 2007 - (Page 16) EDITOR’S NOTE ECENTLY I ATTENDED A charity event with a festive “white hot” theme. The theme extended to the dress code, which was the topic of much discussion as my friends planned for the party. How dressy does “white hot” imply? How literally should you interpret it? Will wearing any color other than white be a faux pas? Are we all going to end up looking the same? The night of the event, surveying the crowd in a crisp sea of whites, I admired how everyone rose to the occasion and was reminded once again that there is no one right answer. Guests interpreted the dress code to suit their own style, decked out in everything from white jeans to cocktail dresses. And it all worked. The cover of this special Style Issue is itself a perfect illustration of the idea that there is no one right solution, a sentiment that has resonated with me and my colleagues since hearing awardwinning National Geographic photographer Dewitt Jones deliver that exact message at Virtuoso’s annual luxury travel conference in August (you know it’s a successful speech when people are still thinking about it months later). Surely you noticed the double cover, a first for Virtuoso Life and a clever solution to our dilemma of which image to use. In truth, R we’d discussed the idea of double covers, and knew the opportunity would present itself at some point. This photo shoot with beautiful images in multiple proved to be just that. For this issue’s cover, we shot on location at Bass Hall in Fort Worth, one of the top performance venues in the country. As with all photo shoots, the stylist brought a selection of clothing and accessories for maximum options, and we photographed many of them. Everyone on our staff had a different favorite gown, and the ones you see on the cover were our top two. The outer cover image, in both wardrobe and demeanor, is traditional and refined, while the image beneath is lively and fun. Either one is right for different reasons, but together they are even better. And that’s just the cover. There’s an entire issue to peruse, filled with in-the-know articles on the best U.S. shopping districts, gift-giving for travelers, bespoke watches, Parisian style, art and architecture in Japan, and more. As we enter the holiday season and plan our travels for the year ahead, “there’s more than one right answer” is an ideal adage to remember not just in decision making but in our interactions with others and even our worldview. Now that’s a solution we can all agree is the right one. So many gowns, only two covers: These were a few of our favorite dresses for the cover of this Style Issue. Which one do you prefer?
