After initial voyages in Europe and the Baltic, the Eurodam crosses the Atlantic for Canadian and New England cruises in the fall. Oslo: First call for the Eurodam (below). Silversea Cruises’ new cooking school. TREASURE CHEST away on the range Sizzling, smoking, truly hot: These oft-used words really do apply to Silversea Cruises’ new Viking Cooking School programs. Viking cooktops have been installed in kitchen theaters on each of the line’s four ships for chef-led classes and technique tips such as the best ways to blanch and fry crisp potatoes for Frenchstyle steak frites. The complimentary classes will emphasize the regional fare of each cruise, from Mediterranean stews to Caribbean braises and casseroles. Renewed Spirit Cruise West’s 138-passenger Spirit of Yorktown emerges from drydock with its first private, open-air balcony cabins, complete with teak-trimmed floors, minifridges, and new fixtures. The upgrades extend to the ship’s public areas and observation lounge, which received new furniture as well as original artwork that includes a healing blanket from Alaska’s Metlakatla community. Its first sailings will be in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés for whale-watching on eight-day round-trip voyages from Cabo San Lucas. Departures: Saturdays from December 22, 2007, through March 1, 2008, from $2,399. Hawaii gains a new cruise experience next winter with American Safari Cruises’ 39-passenger Safari Explorer. Sailing between the Kailua-Kona coast and Maui as of December 2008, the megayacht will take a flexible approach, with nightly moorages in any number of small bays and daily movements tailored to weather conditions and passengers’ desires. Onboard services include yoga and complimentary massages, an extensive wine collection, and scuba equipment for certified divers. Multiple departures: December 19, 2008, through May 9, 2009; from $3,995. BY JIM GULLO 34 V I RT U O S O L I F E Molokini Crater off Maui. (OSLO) JOn ArnOLd ImAgeS / ALAmy EXPEDITION-STYLE ALOHA
