VirtuosoLife - January/February 2008 - (Page 26) EDITOR’S NOTE y desk calendar is One of those “thought for the day” types sprinkled with insight on how to live a full life. some of the tips are social, such as, “say nice things about people; you’ll never regret it.” some are functional, as in, “Give away an article of clothing for every new one you buy,” or the quirky “never pay to ride a camel” (as if that applies to the general population). Most are so simple as to be obvious, yet we still need the reminder. One recent entry surely resonates with anyone: “Treasure your leisure time; all the money in the world can never get it back.” it’s a breathtakingly basic observation, certainly appropriate for a luxury travel magazine, though i’m confident that as a savvy traveler you have no problem seizing the moment and appreciating your good fortune, the world, and the people around you. That’s why we’re thrilled to launch our second annual Travel dreams survey. How do you want to spend your vacation time? When you envision that perfect trip, what do you want to do and where do you most want to go? The new year is a perfect time to look ahead, so please share with us your travel dreams and you may win an all-new 2008 Toyota land cruiser. log on to www.virtuosolife.com before March 31 to take the survey and for your chance to win. The results will be showcased in the July/ august issue of Virtuoso Life. For most of us, europe was our first travel dream, and the continent’s immense diversity continues to call us back. The value M of a european experience far outweighs any exchange rate woes, which is why we’ve put together a special europe issue. The opportunities are endless, and in these pages you’ll find a family vacation in Barcelona (page 108), a rail trip through Great Britain (page 120), an idyllic tour of ireland’s countryside (page 130), or a visit to Portugal (page 94), the latter often pointed to as one of europe’s great economical values. as you likely noticed, the destination on our cover is Portugal (that’s lisbon’s graphically intriguing Parque eduardo Vii). Our staff knows the place well: senior editor Marika Mcelroy cain spent a week there with her husband to research her feature article, and soon after associate art director korena Bolding traveled to lisbon to oversee the accompanying photography shoot. Both returned with a glowing report on the place and especially the people, and with the fresh perspective that travel always seems to impart. as we consider the possibilities of the year ahead, here’s to fresh perspectives, realizing your dreams, and treasuring your time.
