For dragon trees, actually, an ancient species that survives on this volcanic island, 250 miles off the coast of Morocco. It took a while to find one (at Parque García Sanabria), but the search O BY MICHAEL WEBB turned up many other treasures. Tenerife is about 60 miles long, which makes it the largest of the seven Canary Islands, and it’s a distant province of Spain. Ocean breezes temper the heat year-round, and sandy beaches attract crowds of northern European tourists to the south end of the island. Sophisticated visitors may prefer to stay in Santa Cruz, the compact capital at the northwest end.
