Virtuoso Life - March/April 2008 - (Page 67) estate uses the same double pot-distillation technique employed to produce cognac and ages its rums in white Limousin oak – both legacies of the founder’s Charentais origins. The Barbancourt Estate Réserve ($35) is a 15-year-old blend originally kept for the use of the Barbancourt family; it was first offered for sale in the 1960s. With a mediumamber color, it’s velvety on the palate, with tones of caramel, spice, and toasty oak and a long, rich finish. For connoisseurs only. Jamaica lemon aromatics and intense tones of brown sugar, treacle, coffee, and caramel. A Caribbean class act. Bermuda Plantation The French firm that owns Pierre Ferrand Cognac created the Plantation label several years ago for its extraordinary portfolio of aged single-estate rums, sought out from small local producers throughout the Caribbean (and South America) and bottled as vintage-dated spirits. But one is named for a specific island: The complex and alluring Plantation Jamaica 8 Year Old ($30) is one of the best in the maker’s lineup. It delivers suave texture with deep orange- Gosling’s When James Gosling’s ship Mercury, carrying a valuable cargo of wines and spirits, was stranded in Bermuda on its way to America, the enterprising young man, undaunted, simply set up shop in the town of Saint George. The year was 1806, making Gosling’s the oldest existing business on the island. The company’s dark “black” rum – Gosling’s Black Seal – is a blend of pot-still and continuous-still rums. The distillates are sourced from other islands (Bermuda lies in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean, and its geography is not suitable for sugarcane), but Black Seal has long been synonymous with this well-touristed destination. Elegant, thick-textured Gosling’s Old Rum ($80) is an extra-aged version showing treacle with cola, tamarind, and spice overtones. Simply exquisite.
