Virtuoso Life - May/June 2008 - (Page 27) CONTRIBUTORS GREGORY ALLEN (cover photograph) grew up in Seattle and began his career at the Oliviero Toscani Studio in Italy before setting up shop in New York City. “It’s hard to imagine a nicer place to work than the Riviera Maya: turquoise seas, great food (try the habanero sauce!), and rich history,” says the widely traveled photographer. Now based in Mexico City, Allen shoots travel and fashion features for publications such as Travel + Leisure, Time, and W magazine. Growing up in a family of golfers, writer MARGARET LOFTUS (“The Finer Points,” Extraordinarily Caribbean. Quintessentially English, page 160) was never big on the game herself. But after moving to the land of links – South Carolina – and acquiring a set of clubs, she figures it’s time to go beyond minigolf. “Spending a week at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, North San Diego would be the perfect way to jump-start anyone’s game,” Loftus says of the resort’s golf academy – one of eight hotel recreation programs she profiles. The Charleston-based freelancer is a regular contributor to National Geographic Traveler and U.S. News & World Report. Seeking the exotic has kept EVERETT POTTER (“A Sense of Place,” page 98) on the move for more than two decades. “On my first trip to Bangkok back in 1986, I discovered that the best way to recover from a city’s intensity is to have a civilized refuge at the end of the day.” Potter resides outside of New York City, but his travels have brought him across Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. He frequently writes for National Geographic Traveler, New York magazine, and Forbes Life and is a contributing editor of Ski. Photographer PHILIPP ENGELHORN (“Beijing Old and New,” page 84) was born in southern Germany’s Black Forest and worked in New York City for six years before relocating to Hong Kong. “I love assignments in Beijing,” he says. “The bars, the restaurants, and especially the art scene – my favorite thing to do is spend a day or two in the 798 district at the galleries, meeting artists and getting coffee. Sure, with the Olympics things are a little busy and there’s a bit too much renovation, but it’s still my favorite city in China.” Look for Engelhorn’s images in Outside, Condé Nast Traveler, Gourmet, and Newsweek, among others. terrace.
