Virtuoso Life - September/October 2008 - (Page 164) CRUISE CALL Whale of a Time The world’s largest animals and tiny islets draw cruisers to the Sea of Cortés. BY JIM GULLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN BARONE B lue whales arrived on our first day out of loreto, and by the end of the second afternoon it was commonplace to see dozens of pelicans diving for fish. But it was on the third day of a weeklong cruise through Mexico’s sea of Cortés, which at times seems to be inhabited by more whales than people, that something truly remarkable happened. our 22-passenger american safari Cruises yacht, the Safari Quest, anchored in a picture-perfect bay called agua verde on the eastern shore of Baja California, where we shared a long swath of uninhabited, shell-strewn beach with a few local fishermen. we were scheduled to weigh anchor after a morning mule ride through the desert, but as the day grew warm and sunny, everyone was having a great time where we were. that’s when Captain rod Sunrise greets the Safari Quest in Baja’s Agua Verde. The group enjoyed the spot so much, they decided to spend the night there. 164 V I RT U O S O L I F E
