CITy Of VISION Dessau is an easy trip from Berlin and merits a day or two of exploration of its numerous Bauhaus and Bauhaus-influenced sites. Arbeitsamt This innovative former city employment office now operates as the department of motor vehicles. The curved yellow brick walls are windowless, but concentric skylights bathe the interior offices in natural light. Open for tours during office hours. AugustBebel-Platz. Törten Estate Built by Walter Gropius between 1926 and 1928, this collection of 314 single-family guide. Stops include the Bauhaus School, Kornhaus restaurant, and the gardens of Wörlitz. Masters’ Houses A short stroll away from the school stand three of the crisp white stucco houses that were constructed for senior members of the Bauhaus faculty. Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee shared one; Oskar Schlemmer and Georg Muche another; while Lyonel Feininger’s is now home to the Kurt Weill Centre. Brilliant color accents enliven the simple interiors. Open Tuesday through Sunday. Ebertallee 63-71. EAT Restaurant Kornhaus This curved concrete block with a glazed balcony and a broad terrace overlooking a leafy stretch of the Elbe River was built in 1930. The chef, from Nuremberg, prepares such delicious treats as venison with chanterelles and a stew of river fish. Kornhausstrasse 146; 493/40-640-4141. Pachterhaus An intimate dining room in a half-timbered 1743 house serves exemplary fare, including duck breast with mango chutney, roulade of veal stuffed with spinach and ham, and swordfish with saffron cream sauce. Brauhaus zum Alten Dessauer This brewery serves its own beers and hearty local dishes such as goulash, pork tenderloin with mushrooms, roast pork in beer sauce with sauerkraut, and baked duck with pig’s trotters and mixed vegetables.
