Virtuoso Life - January/February 2009 - (Page 69) Bauhaus Detours Weimar is a charming historic city that was home to Goethe and Schiller. The first home of the Bauhaus, designed in 1911 by Henry van de Velde, is now the School of Architecture and Building (Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse 8). Georg Muche’s Musterhaus am Horn, built in 1923 as a prototype for future construction, is located on the east side of the Park an der Ilm. The Bauhaus Museum, displaying the early craft-oriented work of the school, is on the Theaterplatz. Berlin The Bauhaus dream flowered in the German capital in the 1920s and again after the war. A major exhibition of the school’s work will be on display at the MartinGropius-Bau (Niederkirchnerstrasse 7), from June 22 through October 4, and later in the year at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. You can also visit the Bauhaus-Archiv Museum of Design (Klingelhöferstrasse 14) and purchase copies of vintage products and photos.
