Race buffs quaff the best Champagne at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while World Series fans prefer cold American brews. Likewise, it’s hard to imagine the Kentucky Derby without the mint julep. Some years ago I got a special invitation to attend the derby, held every year on the first Saturday in May. My host was Bill Samuels Jr., president of Maker’s Mark Distillery, a National Historic Landmark in Loretto, about an hour south of Louisville. Three days of parties preceding race day helped me develop an intimate familiarity with the mint julep.
