Even though we work together, meetings, deadlines, and to-do lists dominate. Life just gets in the way. But in flight we’re removed from interruptions other than, “Would you like another glass of wine?” During those hours, when we should be sleeping, we put our heads together (literally) and really talk – about our marriages, our children, our parents, and important questions such as, “Should I paint the dining room?” We even brainstorm work solutions, something more easily accomplished away from office distractions. I’m sure our chatting violates cabin etiquette, as we’ve been shushed a few times over the years, but the chance to connect is worth it. So when the opportunity arose last summer to spend a long weekend in London to see the women’s finals at Wimbledon, we jumped – a sort of glamorous girls’ getaway with enormous bragging rights. Of course, we stayed awake nearly the entire night flight over the Atlantic solving the world’s problems. But the jet lag was forgotten when we whisked past the masses who were hoping for tickets outside the gates and entered The Gatsby Club, the hospitality tent of ticket purveyor Keith Prowse Ticketing. We sipped Pimm’s Cups while the staff assisted us with our tickets, then headed to our Centre Court seats, where we marveled at the proper civility of the well-dressed crowd and checked another amazing experience off our life list. That’s what this issue is all about: travel as a way to reconnect with yourself and those important to you while experiencing the world. Virtuoso CEO Matthew Upchurch coined the term “Return on Life ,” adeptly putting a human emotional spin on the business term “return on investment.” What are you really getting out of your life? Travel is an investment that enriches TM in multifaceted ways, the cornerstone of which is simply making memories. As it’s said, travel is one of the only expenditures that makes you richer. In this issue you’ll f ind enriching getaways of all sorts, from family vacations to a couple’s biking trek on the Greek isles, a girlfriends’ getaway weekend, a spiritual journey through Bhutan, mind-and-body wellness retreats, and, yes, attending Wimbledon. Even if it’s just for a weekend jaunt, your travel advisor can help you make the most of your time away, so consider these articles inspiration for your next trip.
