Virtuoso Life - March/April 2009 - (Page 23) CONTRIBUTORS Senior editor MARIKA MCELROY CAIN (“Kauai Connection,” page 62) has a new appreciation for travel since becoming a mom. “It takes more planning to get out there with a kid, but the payoff is bigger too,” she says. “Our family will definitely visit Kauai again.” Cain’s travels for Virtuoso Life have taken her from the jungles of Panama and mountains of New Zealand to the streets of Lisbon and more. With a mother born and raised in Hawaii, photographer KEVIN J. MIYAZAKI has been traveling to the islands for most of his life. “As kids, we spent much more time visiting relatives than we did working on our tans,” he says. “But looking back now, that was the best part.” This was Miyazaki’s first trip to Kauai, where he shot this issue’s cover and “Kauai Connection” (page 62) after dropping by Kona and Hilo to see family. His work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Food & Wine, and a host of news and lifestyle magazines. The past year brought photographer DAVID NICOLAS (“Life in the Slow Lane,” page 74) from Portugal and Peru to Barbados and beyond, but his cruise in Greece stands out. “Biking through beautiful scenery en route to Sparta, thinking about the land’s history, and stopping to eat with locals was a dream come true,” he says. Nicolas was born in Bogota, Colombia, and currently lives in Brooklyn. He counts Gourmet, Travel + Leisure, and Outside among the magazines featuring his images. “Iceland has always conjured something ominous for me – gothic visions of Frankenstein’s monster disappearing across desolate fields of ice,” says writer ANNA SACHSE (“Fired Up About Iceland,” page 125). “Luckily I was wrong. People couldn’t be warmer, and the landscape, while rugged, borders on magical.” Sachse and her husband live in Portland, Oregon, where the skiing, hiking, and biking are plentiful, but Vikings are few. Her stories have appeared in the likes of Los Angeles Times Magazine and McSweeney’s. (MARIKA MCELROY CAIN) KEVIN J. MIYAZAKI MARCH | APRIL 2009 23
