wall drawings and installations. The museum hints at what's possible when old is
made new again.
My adventure wraps up back in Lenox at
Blantyre, another storied 1900s mansion retreat, delightfully over the top in its throwback opulence. Its guest rooms and halls
contain more than 4,000 volumes of art and
photography books. Couples and families
still dress up for dinner, though ties are no
longer required for gentlemen.
Most evenings, talented Karèn Tchougourian tickles the ivories on the Music
Room's magnificent grand piano as cocktails are served. Mozart and Vivaldi typically start the night, but then the requests
roll in. Count on Sinatra, maybe something by The Beatles, and the occasional
pop ballad by Katy Perry or Pharrell. Inevitably, though, the crowd-pleaser of
the night is by an iconic troubadour born
down the turnpike in Boston. It could be
"Fire and Rain" or "Sweet Baby James" or
"Shower the People." Whatever it is, raise
your glass and sing along.
Clockwise from top left: Wheatleigh's lobster with osetra caviar,
Blantyre's Main House, and a roadside stand in Lenox.
