Virtuoso Life - May/June 2017 - 38
Make nice with the machine: Lie detection
at international borders is taking a sci-fi leap
forward with the new Automated Virtual
Agent for Truth Assessments in Real-Time - aka
AVATAR. The kiosk displays a virtual customs agent
who interviews inbound travelers, asking, "Are you
carrying a weapon?" among other, more innocuous
questions. It uses eye-detection software, facial analysis, and motion and pressure sensors to identify signs
of lying (it can even tell if interviewees curl their toes),
and is currently being tested by the Canadian border
protection agencies at various airports.
Fliers who sign up for Frankfurt Airport's VIP Services can now access a new lounge with a cigar room, a

soaking tubs - and views of the runway. Along with a
full bar, the lounge serves an international menu ranging from spicy lemongrass soup to Italian charcuterie,
German sausages, caviar, and even camel's-milk
chocolate. IP Services from $360 for the first passenger and $280 for each additional passenger, including
lounge access, limo transfers to and from aircraft, and
private security and customs clearance.
