kajmak (a dairy spread flavored with strawberries or porcini mushrooms and hazelnuts) with homemade pita bread. The spicy
pljeskavica sausage, which comes with a
creamy cheese and hot-pepper salad, is another can't-miss dish. Tame its heat with a
crisp, local Zajecarsko beer.
3:30 PM: A leisurely 15-minute walk
south along the Sava River leads to
Savamala, the heart of the city's creative
community. "When I was growing up,
Savamala was the industrial warehouse
zone," says San Diego-based Virtuoso travel
V I RT U O S O L I F E
advisor Sanda Stevovic' , a Belgrade native.
"Now it's filled with bars, cafés, and restaurants with beautiful river views."
KC Grad (Brace Krsmanovic 4) kicked
off the neighborhood's transformation and
is still one of its biggest draws. Housed
in an old warehouse, the art gallery, café,
and clothing boutique hosts performances
ranging from DJs to jazz shows, film
screenings, and artist talks after dark.
Wrap up the day on the patio at laid-back
Tranzit Bar (Brace Krsmanovic 8), a favored place for cocktails and snacks from
happy hour through late night.
