My favorite travel memory: A hot-air
balloon ride in Myanmar (1) in 2002, rising
in the sky as the clouds disappeared and
revealed a spectacular view of Bagan. That
feeling - peace, fulfillment, and being able
to completely switch off - is hard to forget.
The attributes that make an SLH property:
Quality, authenticity, quirkiness, and colorful
staff. Our 500-plus hotels are truly representative of their destinations. Lisbon's Pousada de
Lisboa (2) is a great example - it has one of the
best locations in the city, overlooking the Praça
do Comércio (3).. It ticks so many boxes in
terms of heritage, art, history, and luxury.

per year: Approximately 170.
The first thing I do when I check in: I typically scan the room - it's the instinctive
hotelier in me - and then I immediately connect to the Internet.
