The past inspires the

N MILAN, FASHION WEEKS COME AND
go in a dazzling whirl of camera flashes.
So too does the Salone del Mobile, the annual international furniture fair that catapults design trends around the world. Having
reported on the city for close to a decade, I've
faithfully followed the headlines proclaiming
what's new this second. What makes Milan
most fascinating, though, is not the latest
trend but the ever-present tension between
new and old in every corner of the city. These
days, the Milanese effortlessly shuttle between artisan shops and designer boutiques,
trattorias and nightclubs. The beauty of the
city lies in the juxtaposition of old-school institutions and their modern counterparts.
