Virtuoso Life - May/June 2018 - 44
Four new ships on the
scene this summer.
Call it a cruise ship, but Seabourn's new 600-passenger
Seabourn Ovation - sister ship to the Seabourn
Encore - feels more like a floating museum, with a
1,600-piece art collection that's on display everywhere from the ship's all-veranda suites to
the walls of Thomas Keller's chophouse-style
restaurant. Get inspired on a 14-day roundtrip-from-Copenhagen voyage that calls on
Oslo, Edinburgh, Scotland's Shetland Islands, and other destinations. Departure:
August 4; from $6,999.
In response to demand for shorter river-cruise itineraries, Crystal Cruises' new 106-passenger ships, the
Crystal Debussy and the Crystal Ravel, will sail
the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on several
seven-day voyages - including a Basel-toAmsterdam Rhine cruise on the Debussy. The
vessels bring the line's European river ship
count to five, a rapid expansion that began
with the Crystal Mozart in 2016. Departures: Multiple dates, May 3, 2018, through
November 12, 2019; from $2,720.
In Oslo, Virtuoso Voyages passengers can take
an exclusive shore excursion to Vigeland Park
and the Oslo Opera House - capped off with
a private concert.
Clockwise from top left: A Seabourn
Ovation signature suite; Palm Court,
a cocktail lounge on Crystal Ravel and
Crystal Debussy; and the AmaLea.
A capital way to take in the Danube: With a glass of riesling in hand from the swim-up bar during an eight-day Vilshofen,
Germany-to-Budapest cruise on AmaWaterways' new 156-passenger AmaLea. The wine complements views from
staterooms too (many of which have balconies), but take a break from tasting before grabbing a loaner bike for a spin
through the Austrian countryside. Departures: Multiple dates, May 4, 2018, through November 11, 2019; from $2,999.
After 20 years apart, Windstar Cruises is reuniting with the Last Frontier.
The 212-passenger Star Legend will homeport in Vancouver, British Columbia,
this summer and explore Alaska on several 11- to 14-day sailings. Itineraries
capitalize on the small ship's ability to get close to the state's most pristine
natural habitats: On a 12-day Vancouver-to-Anchorage cruise, the ship slips
through the Inside Passage's Misty Fiords National Monument and glides
past glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park. An onboard crew of naturalists
and glaciologists lead kayaking, hiking, and photo expeditions. Departures:
July 24 and August 30; from $3,499.
