Noordwijk. Its stretch of beach,
colorful flower fields, and beautiful dunes make it a refreshing
place to unwind and relax.
TOP OF THE LIST: The perfect
place to discover the city's
vibrant atmosphere is at the
famous Nine Streets [Negen
Straatjes], a UNESCO World
Heritage site located in the
middle of the canal belt. The
streets are home to many
exclusive fashion, design, and
home decor shops.
WHEN FRIENDS FROM OUT
of town visit Leenders, the managing director of the 111-room De
L'Europe, he loves to see them
experience the city's diversity. "Amsterdam has positively
developed so much over the past
few years, from art and fashion
to architecture and gastronomy,"
he says. "It makes the city a truly VINTAGE DIGS: For those
with a passion for art and culture, one of Amsterdam's most
special areas is the SpiegelWEEKEND GETAWAY: The

AN AMSTERDAM RESIDENT
for more than 40 years, Italianborn Payer joined the 93-room
Waldorf Astoria when it opened
in 2014. "Our building used
to be the MeesPierson Bank,
and the Vault Bar is set in the
old safe," Payer says. Many of
the bank's twentieth-century
interiors remain, including the
original safe-deposit boxes.
SUMMER PASTIMES: I love to
cook and enjoy dinner outside
with a view over the canals.
And if it's sunny, it's just a short
drive to the beautiful beaches
of Zandvoort and Noordwijk
to enjoy the sunset.
ROOM WITH A VIEW: At
1,324 square feet, the Brentano
V I RT U O S O L I F E
Suite is our largest room. It's on
the first floor, with incredible
natural light and Gentlemen's
Canal [Herengracht] views.
PRO TIPS: Café 't Smalle is
one of the few bars in Amsterdam where you can sit with a
drink outside near the canal. A
cultural site that locals know
about is Museum Ons' Lieve
Heer op Solder [Our Dear Lord
in the Attic], a seventeenthcentury canal house and church.
HELLO, VAN GOGH: The
Kröller-Müller Museum, an
hour's drive east in Otterlo, is
home to the world's secondlargest van Gogh collection [the
largest is at Amsterdam's Van
Gogh Museum], with nearly 90
paintings and more than 180
drawings. Its sculpture garden is
one of the largest in Europe.
