Virtuoso Life Australia Special Edition – May 2017 - 3
Reports from Virtuoso advisors' travels in Australia.
TLANTA-BASED VIRTUOSO TRAVEL
advisor Betty Jo Currie, along with Virtuoso
advisors Kristen Pike and Kristene Fitzgerald, recently toured the best of Australia on
a two-week private jet tour. As Currie says,
"This is an iconic journey ... a last great frontier with
something for everyone - and some of the nicest folks in
the world." Currie praised Drew Kluska and The Tailor,
a company that works with Virtuoso advisors to craft
custom experiences, for their impeccable planning. "You
really do need someone to tailor - no pun intended -
your trip and the places you stay," she says. Here are a
few highlights from her trip.
Betty Jo Currie at Kangaroo
Island's Remarkable Rocks.
"I loved the landscape and empty beaches when you got
out into remote areas. Seeing koalas and kangaroos,
Uluru and Northern Territory rock art, wild weather and
seals at Kangaroo Island, Tasmanian devils, and the incredible architecture everywhere were
just a few highlights. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef and taking in the emptiness of the Outback made more of an impression than I imagined."
Best Culinary Memories:
"The chef's table at Bistro Remy at The Langham in Sydney, and the seafood spread at Qualia
in the Whitsunday Islands - it was one of the most amazing I've ever seen."
"Longitude 131 for its 'Outback luxury' vibe, and Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo
Island for the architecture and the way it hugs the coast."

What tops your Australia vacation list?
"Melbourne is a food lover's delight. On a recent trip, Southern Crossings, one
of Virtuoso's on-site connections in Australia, arranged a great gourmet walking
tour of the city's laneways with stops at restaurants that we loved. A must-do: the
Australian Open, pro tennis circuit's 'Happy Grand Slam,' which the city hosts
during the last two weeks of January. Sunny warm weather and fun-loving Aussies make a great break from our winter!"
- Troy Haas, Birmingham, Alabama
"Tasmania is real and authentic Australia. The scenery is stunning - Cradle
Mountain is excellent for hiking and seeing wildlife, and the island has a fabulous
culinary scene (including great oysters). The 20-room Saffire Freycinet is one
Cradle Mountain at sunrise.
Great for a Drink:
"Bondi Beach in Sydney and
Richard Branson's Makepeace
Island, just outside Noosa,
which reminded me of river
camps along the Mississippi."
"I highly recommend the
Harbour BridgeClimb, taking
a harbor cruise to see the city
from the water, and an afternoon at Bondi Beach."
"It sounds outrageous, but
three couples can hire a private plane and do the country
well for far less than you would
think. If you did this kind of trip
with commercial airlines, you
are talking about the difference of thousands, not tens of
thousands, of dollars. There's
a tempo to traveling here, and
Australia is a big place. I'd recommend a two-week journey
for the best experience."
of the world's best eco-luxury
lodges, a great destination for
honeymooners and families."
- Lynda Turley Garrett,
"For one of the most beautiful
strolls in the world, take a cab
from Sydney to Bronte Beach and
walk along the cliffside path to
Bondi Beach. It takes about an
hour, and it's worth it. Bring your swimsuit for a dip in the Icebergs pool afterward. As for hotels, I love the Opera View Rooms at the 155-room Park Hyatt
Sydney - it's hard to beat those views."
