Sponsored by the Schaumburg Business Association, the annual speech gives President Larson a chance to discuss current community projects and other issues affecting the village. President Larson talked about many new businesses that have opened or are opening in the community such as buybuy BABY, Noodles and Company, Culver’s, Chicago Prime Steakhouse, Papa John’s, Potbelly, Einstein Bagels, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Season’s 52, Dick’s Roselle Roadhouse, and Whole Foods. The village is still actively involved in the development of the STAR rail line, a high capacity mass transit system that will run from Rosemont to Hoffman Estates and beyond. Belt-tightening measures like a hiring freeze and travel restrictions have helped reduce the year’s expected deficit from $8.1 million to $4.2 million. President Larson said “We will end the year, having to dip into our reserve funds, but not to the extent we thought.” Schaumburg’s current commitment is to not lay off employees and send them out into the job market in this economy, he concluded. Village Suspends Brush Pickup and Mulch Delivery Program for 2009 The Village of Schaumburg is faced with making difficult decisions to address the budget deficit due to the economic down turn. The semi-annual brush pickup and mulch delivery programs will be suspended for 2009. The cost of the two programs is approximately $140,000 per year including labor, contractual, and equipment costs. Labor formerly used for these programs will be reallocated to reduce the costs of contracted park way tree trimming. Residents are encouraged to use the yard waste disposal program already provided through Allied Waste/Republic Services. Listed below are conditions for participation in the refuse contractor’s brush pickup program: • Smaller brush and yard waste can be placed into biodegradable bags not to exceed 30 gallons in capacity or 50 pounds in weight. • Larger brush piles must be bundled using garden string or twine. The bundle size is restricted to 4’ in length, 2’ diameter, and no heavier than 50 pounds. Branches cannot exceed 3” in diameter. • Branches or stumps larger than 3” in diameter cannot be placed in the landscape waste bags; they must be handled with regular refuse. Weight is limited to a maximum of 50 pounds. Excessive amounts will incur a charge or require an alternative disposal method. If a special pick-up is required or for more information, call Allied Waste/Republic Services (800.650.0303) for more information. There will be a limited amount of mulch available for pickup at the Engineering and Public Works complex. Mulch will be available beginning May 1 while supplies last. Residents are asked to enter the complex at Continued on page 3 pg. 2 311 in Schaumburg pg. 7 Trickster Gallery pg. 11 Septemberfest sponsorship opportunities pg. 10 Arts & Back Vehicle sticker Entertainment Page information
