taught a six week workshop, “Take Charge of Your Health: Live Well, Be Well.” This series teaches seniors how to effectively manage their chronic health conditions to reduce hospital visits. Human Services Division In July, the village was presented with the City Livability Award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors for our Intergenerational Garden project. Now in its second year, the garden, which is located adjacent to the Barn, is tended by participants from the Senior Center and Teen Center. Ripe produce is used in the salad bar at the Senior Center's daily nutritious luncheon program, for healthy snacks at the Teen Center, and is also donated to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry. The Senior Program at the Barn was one of two suburban sites selected by the Greater Chicago Food Depository for a pilot Older Adult Food Market. This program, which runs every other Friday afternoon and is free of charge, allows anyone age 60 or older to select from numerous food items to take home. Items provided include fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as staples such as cereal, rice, and canned goods. The Family Counseling Center, now located in the Turret House at 17 E. Schaumburg Road, continues to offer quality affordable counseling for families, couples, and individuals who reside in Schaumburg. Licensed therapists provide assistance on a wide variety of problem areas, such as relationship difficulties, parent-child challenges, and depression/anxiety. Strengthening Youth Development was an initiative offered this year at the Teen Center. The goal of this program is to maintain and reinforce the daily character lessons and positive youth development that takes place within the Teen Center program. The Teen Center offered various activities and lessons to teen members that focused on influencing and Village of Schaumburg media connections www.villageofschaumburg.com Village of Schaumburg SchaumburgIL enhancing character development. Each month a theme was highlighted to recognize positive character growth such as respect, diversity, responsibility, and more. The Teen Center provides teens a safe, supervised environment where they may participate in a number of activities. Video games, pool tables, ping-pong, darts, foosball, arts and crafts, puzzles and games, and computers are available for use every day. As they do each year, personnel from our Police Social Service unit followed up on all domestic violence situations that were reported to the Police Department, with our police social workers offering threat-of-violence assessments; education on domestic violence and the legal system; court advocacy in criminal and civil court; referrals for shelter, legal assistance, and counseling; and transportation to court and/or safe shelter. Public Relations Division The village e-newsletter is sent out on a weekly basis. Over the past year, 52 e-newsletters have been sent out to over 4,300 subscribers. In addition to general press releases about village events, awards, and activities, a number of special press releases promoting new businesses in the community have been posted throughout the year. To address the fast-changing landscape of the internet and the way residents, businesses, and visitors communicate and obtain information from the village online, social networking is yet another communication tool the village has optimized. The village continues to maintain its presence on Facebook and Twitter and has increased postings to over five per day. About 1,300 people ‘like’ the village on Facebook and there are about 1,700 followers on Twitter. The Public Relations Division sends out the community newsletter, The Cracker Barrel, on a quarterly basis. This four-color publication, developed by the village’s editor and graphic designer, contains timely information on events and village news. W W W . V I L L A G E O F S C H A U M B U R G .
