Can't Miss Opportunities: History

MORE

Virginia is home to eight U.S. Presidents, more than any
other state in the nation. Enjoy a trip to the birthplaces and
historic sites frequented by presidents including: Mount
Vernon, Monticello, Montpelier, Ash Lawn Highland,
Berkeley Plantation and Stratford Hall.
`

April 9, 1865 marked the beginning
of the long road to reuniting as
Americans. Hear the stories of those
who served, and those who survived;
see the items used through this grim
time; and learn of the legacy that still
affects America and our world today.

Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place for
more than 400,000 active-duty service members, veterans
and their families. Located across the Potomac River from
Washington D.C., visitors can discover Arlington cemetery's
rich history, witness the time-honored ceremonies and take
in the scenic landscapes.

In Richmond, plan a trip to the historic Virginia State
Capitol. Designed by Thomas Jefferson and first occupied
in 1788 by Virginia's General Assembly, it is the oldest
legislature building continuously operating in the United
States.
`

More Civil War battles were fought in Virginia, by far,
than in any other state. Museums, trails and preserved
battlefields can be found throughout Virginia, including the
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, the site
of the surrender and the end of the American Civil War.
