CRAFT CIDERS & OTHER SIPS by Annie Tobey 38 I wound my way along rolling rural roads, flanked by fields and forests, with neat, tidy homes scattered along the way. When I turned in at the sign for Old Hill Hard Cider, just a few miles off I-81, sentinels of apple trees greeted my arrival. The gnarled branches of these trees spoke of their age. Indeed, I learned from owners Shannon and Sarah Showalter that the orchards are celebrating their 100th birthday, the same year the Showalters began marketing Old Hill ciders commercially. I also learned that Shannon grew up on this land. It's not only his experience that shows in the ciders he makes, but also his pride in the craft and the land. A big part of the artisan beverage movement, cideries are popping up across Virginia. Apples, honey and corn are playing a starring role in the state's newest beverages: cider, mead and craft spirits. Virginia's cideries are often set in bucolic locations, surrounded by orchards, fields or mountain scenery. As you sample hard ciders in the tasting rooms, hosts are eager to help you appreciate this traditional American drink. They can ` PX, Old Town Alexandria guide you in distinguishing the subtleties of the apples that go into making each hard cider - like the many heirloom apples used at Albemarle CiderWorks near Charlottesville. They can help you note the nuances in color, aroma and taste. As I've visited the state's cideries, I've learned that, like the craftspeople that make them, all ciders are not alike. Some ciderists use traditional methods, others prefer the new; some follow old English methods and others the American ways; some are purists - just apples, thank you very much - and others
