FOOD LOVERS
Long before the farm-to-table movement took hold of the culinary
world, Virginians knew a thing or two about farm-to-table dining,
having been the first to lay the foundations for farming and
sustainability that would feed communities for generations to
come. Captain John Smith once marveled at the abundance of
the Chesapeake Bay; Thomas Jefferson aspired to produce wine
varietals rivaling those from Spain and France; and, inspired by
the Native Americans' approach to smoking meats in the 1600s,
Virginia country hams earned an international reputation.
Undeniably, it was our rich agricultural heritage that sparked
our love affair with food and our artisanal approach to farming,
distilling and beyond. Today, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to
the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and every bit of fertile land
in between, our passionate farmers, growers, food artisans and
chefs have collectively spurred an energetic culinary movement
deeply rooted in our country's heritage, cementing The Birthplace
of American Cuisine as one of the country's greatest gastronomical
regions of today.
