NINTENDO IS CONQUERING THE
PLANET WITH ITS HIT CONSOLE-
AND THE HELP OF A
CERTAIN PLUMBER

T

he coolest, most powerful hardware in
the world doesn't sell game systems. A
strong software lineup makes the difference between having a hit like the original
PlayStation and a sad footnote like the Saturn,
Sega's excellent but underappreciated PlayStation competitor.
Nintendo has had its share of hits and
misses over the years, but rarely as radical a
difference as between the Wii and the Wii U.
While not lacking for innovation or capability the Wii U's too-similar branding confused
consumers, and developers never really came
up with great uses for its tablet-like GamePad.
Then along came the Switch, another
strange idea: a hybrid system that could be
used as a portable or hooked up to a TV, with
removable controllers and the ability to play
multiplayer by connecting systems together
locally, or even by sharing the same screen,
big or small.
At launch, the Switch was fortunate
enough to have an incredible new Legend of
Zelda game. Originally designed for the Wii U,
