Washington, D.C. Visitors Guide - Winter/Spring 2008 - (Page 101) inaugural festival kicks off on May 10 with the European Union Embassies Open House, hosted by the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, DC. Additional events and programs, including concerts, performances, exhibitions, culinary programs, lectures and more, will take place from May 3-17, culminating in a final day of open houses at embassies from around the world. Later in May, Afghanistan comes into focus as DC plays host to a major exhibition of ancient treasures and artifacts that were believed to be lost in the modern-day turmoil of civil war and political unrest. Organized by the National Geographic Society, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum begins its 17-month US tour at the National Gallery of Art. The artifacts span 3,000 years of history, including treasures like intricate coins, thrones, ornaments and even mummies. It runs May 25-Sept. 7. No matter what time of year you visit, it’s easy to be a part of the international side of the city. Experience DC’s Japanese connections at the National Cherry Blossom Festival, held in late March and April, or explore cultures from around the globe during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in late June and early July. Log on to Washington.org and click on our calendar of events for more information, or check The Embassy Series (embassyseries.com) or Embassy Events (embassyevents. com) for details on events at the embassies, ambassadors’ residences and foreign cultural centers. Or, get a taste of world culture without the leaving the country in at attractions like the National Museum of African Art or the Freer & Sackler Galleries of Art, which house an impressive collection of Asian art and artifacts. Another international experience awaits visitors to Little Rome, a corner of Northeast DC that’s home to more Catholic sites than any place outside of the Vatican. In DC’s Chinatown neighborhood, you’ll find a colorful arch spanning H Street and businesses marked by Chinese characters. expLoring internationaL dC a CosMopolitan WorlD Capital, DC serves as home base for international agencies like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Walk around the city and you’ll hear Chinese, Spanish, Farsi and other languages spoken. Head to eclectic neighborhoods like Adams Morgan, Mount Pleasant and Shaw and you’ll find restaurants serving cuisine from South and Central America, Asia, Africa and everywhere in between. At the heart of international DC is the diplomatic community. The city is home to more than 180 embassies – and many of them are located along “Embassy Row,” the stretch of Massachusetts Avenue north of Dupont Circle and south of Wisconsin Avenue. International DC comes into focus this spring with Cultural Tourism DC’s Passport DC, a weeklong cultural event featuring performances, lectures, exhibitions and additional cultural programming at the city’s embassies and international cultural centers.
