It’s the latest development on the Southeast waterfront, and its arrival promises to introduce throngs of local and visiting sports fans to a historic neighborhood that’s seeing big changes: the waterfront and the nearby Washington Navy Yard. The $611 million, 41,000-seat stadium hits an architectural home run. Sleekly styled to blend with DC’s iconic glass and marble buildings, it offers panoramic views of the Capitol dome, the Washington Monument, the riverfront and other familiar sights. Baseball fans who travel to the District during the team’s April-throughSeptember season can take part in ballpark tours and snap up bargainpriced grandstand tickets starting at just $5. The park also comes equipped with family-friendly amenities and play areas designed to make outings fun and exciting for visitors of all ages. There’s not a bad seat in the house, either, thanks in part to the team’s 4,500 square-foot high-definition video scoreboard, the largest in a baseball their capture, where Charles Lindbergh appeared after his transatlantic flight and where the U.S.S. Constitution was outfitted for battle. Visitors to the new ballpark can learn about the Navy Yard and see a fascinating collection of naval artifacts at the nearby U.S. Navy Museum (appointment required). “the park also comes equipped with family-friendly amenities and play areas designed to make outings fun and exciting for visitors of all ages.” stadium to date. Keeping with the District’s eco-conscious building initiatives, the stadium is striving to become the first major green accredited stadium in the US. The arrival of the ballpark to Southeast DC is fueling a wave of development around the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy’s oldest shore establishment and home of the Chief of Naval Operations. Steeped in historical significance, the Navy Yard was once the Navy’s largest shipbuilding facility and served as a strategic defense post in the War of 1812 and the Civil War. It’s where the Lincoln assassination conspirators were detained following Visit nationals.com to learn about stadium tours, tickets and more. Official Visitors Guide 5 While Nats fans will first step into the stadium on March 29 for an exhibition game with the Baltimore Orioles, the ballpark’s national television debut takes place the following night, when the Nats take on the Atlanta Braves in their official home opener. But that’s not the only excitement for the stadium this spring. On April 17, Pope Benedict XVI will say Mass at the ballpark during his visit to the US – the first for a pope since John Paul II’s visit in 1979. http://www.wnba.com/mystics http://www.web.mlsnet.com http://www.capitals.nhl.com http://www.Redskins.com http://www.nba.com/wizards http://www.nationals.com
