Famous for polkas and wurst, New Braunfels hosts the annual Wurstfest in October. It is also home to the original Schlitterbahn Water Park, the world’s largest and voted No. 1 by the Travel Channel. Take time to visit the Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest cave in Texas, that showcases more than 10,000 underground formations. From New Braunfels, head west on Highway 46 to Boerne. group tour planning one of only a few in the world. Historical structures, unique shops, antique stores, art galleries, cafes and coffee shops line the streets. And just outside of town is the Cave Without a Name, a natural cavern with amazing geological formations. To continue the Southern Loop, go back towards New Braunfels on Highway 46. Bastrop One of the area’s most beautiful and oldest settlements with antebellum mansions, towering pine trees, Bastrop is often called the most historic small town in Texas. The town has more than 130 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Main Street offers a variety of shops plus restaurants with live music, historic drug store with the original soda fountain and entertainment venues. After exploring the town, head out to Bastrop State Park to see the famous Lost Pines, an isolated region of loblolly pines were armadillos, rabbits, squirrels and white-tail deer make their homes. Take in the scenery at any of Bastrop’s four golf courses. The area’s newest destination is Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa. Boerne Settled by German immigrants in 1849, Boerne is a tiny treasure nestled in the magnificent surroundings of the Texas Hill Country. Boerne offers exceptional shopping, dining, arts and attractions in a quaint, historic and picturesque setting. Named after Ludwig Boerne, a German poet and publicist, the town of Boerne is home to more than 140 historical structures that tell stories of its past.
