Austin Official Visitors Guide - Fall/Winter 2007-2008 - (Page 14) BLUEGRASS Austin bluegrass bands are anything but homogenous, with each group putting its own spin on the genre. The South Austin Jug Band is one of Austin’s most promising, having played at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where they won the award for best new band, as well as the Austin City Limits Music Festival. The Greencards, two Aussies and a Brit, came together in Austin and developed a sizable national following. Today, they’re recording in Nashville, but they continue to play locally. The Gourds are true Austin natives who crafted a unique sound blending alt-country with bluegrass, while the Austin Lounge Lizards apply offbeat lyrics to a sound with unmistakable bluegrass roots. COUNTRY Asleep at the Wheel is one of the biggest bands to ever emerge from the Austin music scene, winning nine Grammy awards and working tirelessly to keep the Western swing style of music alive. Willie Nelson, one Austin artist who needs no introduction, often receives credit for jumpstarting the city’s music scene. After decades in the music business, he has built a solid catalog of tunes, a loyal following, the respect of countless other musicians and a reputation for marching to his own unique beat. Grammy darlings, the Dixie Chicks have kept a fiercely loyal local fan base from their early days of country and bluegrass. Other popular country acts are Dale Watson, Haybale, Jerry Jeff Walker and Cory Morrow.
