Austin Official Visitors Guide - Fall/Winter 2007-2008 - (Page 9) Entertainment Districts SIXTH STREET THE STREETS: Sixth Street, from Congress to IH-35 THE STORY: Once known as Pecan Street, Sixth Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While most of the buildings date to the turn of the century, the street now lies at Austin’s epicenter of live music and afterdark excitement. There are nearly 50 clubs and live music venues along East Sixth Street, including Nuno’s on Sixth, BD Riley’s, Iron Cactus and Maggie Mae’s, to name just a few. Chances are you’ll find music in just about every establishment on Sixth Street, whether it’s a bar, a restaurant or a pool hall. THE SECRET FIND: Often closed to vehicular traffic on weekend evenings and holidays such as Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras, Sixth Street doubles as Austin’s biggest and best block party. SOUTH CONGRESS THE STREETS: South Congress, from Riverside Drive to Ben White Blvd. THE STORY: Eclectic is the word of choice to describe South Congress, where retro clothing shops are next to stores with Texas-sized inventories of cowboy boots and Western wear; chic cafes with mid-century modern décor stand beside year-round costume shops; and kitsch emporiums offer a mind-boggling variety of items. THE SECRET FIND: Visit Uncommon Objects and explore the labyrinth of shelves stocked with an impressive collection of strange and wonderful objects — things you never knew existed but suddenly can’t live without. Leaving empty handed is never an option. W W W. A U S T I N T E X A S. O R G 9 http://www.austintexas.org
