American Art, American City 2 The Terra Foundation for American Art’s American Art, American City initiative continues to put the spotlight on American art throughout the city this season. As part of the program, the Chicago Architecture Foundation will offer its Tiffany on Wednesdays Architecture Walking Tour including the Chicago Cultural Center’s recently restored, and world’s largest, Tiffany glass dome (through December 31). Through January, the Field Museum presents The Painted Bird: Louis Agassiz Fuertes from its collection of the artist’s work, many never before seen by the public. Beginning January 23, the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University will present Polaroids: Mapplethorpe, tracing Robert Mapplethorpe’s use of instant photography from 1970 to 1975 through a collection of self-portraits, figure studies, still lifes and portraiture in a largely unknown body of his work. And at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Alexander Calder in Focus continues, exploring 50 years of this whimsical artist’s career and displaying examples of his mobiles, stabiles, drawings and paintings. This winter, McCormick Place becomes the place to be for anyone who likes to get out and go. The 79th Annual Chicago Boat, RV and Outdoors Show kicks off this January featuring more than 600 boats, 200 recreational vehicles and hundreds of booths. Exhibitors will be showing off new marine equipment, travel destinations, outfitters, charter boats, Jet Skis and fishing tackle, just to name a few, giving outdoor enthusiasts the biggest selection under one roof. Nearby at Navy Pier, the Strictly Sail Show will present exhibitors from around the world, informative seminars and exciting events, all about sailing. A few weeks later, the Chicago Auto Show rolls into town, showcasing cars, trucks and SUVs from across the spectrum all on one show floor at McCormick Place. World-Class Theater Move over, Broadway; Chicago’s theater scene will be outdoing itself this season with all the hottest shows — some before they even reach the Great White Way! Other main-stage favorites, including Grease, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Xanadu and more, will be making their debuts through early 2009.
