Chicago Official Visitors Guide - Summer/Fall 2008 - (Page 39) 2. Free Festivals 2 Taste of Chicago, taking place June 27–July 6, is a favorite Chicago tradition. Restaurants set up booths in Grant Park and millions of native Chicagoans and visitors descend to sample the sumptuous food Chicago has to offer. Admission is free, and the amazing food, music, performances and other events make this enormous city picnic a favorite year after year. Every Tuesday night from July 15–August 26, the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival lights up the night at Butler Field in Grant Park. Films are free and always fun, ranging from family favorites such as The Sound of Music to comedies such as Young Frankenstein to classics including Rebel Without a Cause. Come early for the best seats. In October, Chicago invites all the spooks and goblins out to play for a month-long celebration of Halloween with Chicagoween. Events include a haunted village at Daley Plaza, Halloween parades, pumpkin decorating, spooky storytellers, high-flying performers and Navy Fear at Navy Pier to name just a few. Admission to the general events is always free. 2 3. Free to See and Do 3 Many museums and cultural attractions in Chicago have free admission days year-round. Be sure to check Web sites or call for information when planning your trip to take advantage of these special days. And don’t forget: the Lincoln Park Zoo is free every day of the year — one of the only remaining free zoos in the country. Other free festivals and events take place throughout the summer.
