Traditionally held the Saturday Nordstrom before Thanksgiving Day, the event is free and open Michigan Avenue to the public. Crowds gather on Michigan Avenue to enjoy live musical shows, a holiday petting zoo and family entertainment by Chicagoland organizations that include gymnasts, choirs and dance performances. That evening, Mickey Mouse and friends head down the Magnificent Mile lighting more than one million white lights. The day closes with a fantastic fireworks show over the Chicago River. The Mile is dotted with a number of historic buildings, relaxing nooks and captivating museums. A great way to explore them is to tour the Mile on a cozy horse-drawn carriage. If you prefer a bird’s eye view, try the outdoor observation deck on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center (875 N. Michigan Ave.) — Chicago’s only open-air skywalk. Less than a block off the Mile, The Museum of Contemporary Art (220 E. Chicago Ave.) houses works from internationally acclaimed artists and its shop is full of unique gifts. Looking for an indulgent treat? Grab a delicious cup of hot cocoa at Hershey’s Chicago (822 N. Michigan Ave.) pg 25
