I am pleased to invite you to experience the exciting events and activities that make our city a wonderful place to live and visit year-round. Art and architecture abound: • Chicago Artists Month features exhibitions and studio explorations (October). • View more than 50 of the Chicago History Museum’s greatest 19th- and 20th-century couture pieces at Chic Chicago: Couture Treasures. • See the art of Edvard Munch, painter of the iconic masterpiece The Scream, at the Art Institute of Chicago exhibition, Becoming Edvard Munch: Influence, Anxiety, and Myth (opening February 14, 2009). • The citywide celebration of American Art, Terra Foundation’s American Art, American City, continues with the CAF Tiffany on Wednesdays Architecture Walking Tour. The tour includes the Chicago Cultural Center’s recently restored, and world’s largest, Tiffany glass dome (through December 31). A must-see, the Chicago Humanities Festival inspires with a compelling lineup that includes theater, music, art, architecture, performances, public policy discussions and literary presentations personifying the festival’s 2008 theme, Thinking Big (through November 16). Theater and music include: • Tony Award-winner, Goodman Theatre honors Eugene O’Neill with the rarely seen Desire Under the Elms, featuring Brian Dennehy (starting January 17). • Another winner, new-play champion Victory Gardens stages the world premiere of Gloria Bond Clunie’s Living Green, a contemporary homage to Raisin in the Sun, (January 23–March 1). • 2008 Tony-winner, Chicago Shakespeare Theater offers Michael Pennington’s Sweet William, a one-man salute to the Bard (February 3–22). • Toni Morrison’s opera, Margaret Garner, debuts in Chicago at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University (November 1–9). • International dancers entertain at Harris Theater in Millennium Park during the popular Tango Fire and Prokofiev’s Cinderella (January). Chicago’s Downtown Farmstand (66 E. Randolph Street, through mid-December) offers locally produced fruits, vegetables, herbs in season and more. And, join in classes, discussions and seminars highlighting our local sustainable food industry. Celebrate the season at Franken Plaza (Daley Plaza, through October 31). Ice-skate at Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink (starting November 12, weather permitting). Shop with Chicago fashion designers and boutiques during Glitter at the Chicago Cultural Center (November 19). Browse Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza (Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve), and experience Holiday Sports Festival’s tournaments, sports demonstrations and interactive fun at McCormick Place (December 27–29).
