Chicago Official Visitors Guide 2008-2009 - (Page 40) choosechicago.com holiday traditions chicago celebrating in style Chicago takes its holiday traditions very seriously. Whether you’re joining the spooks and goblins for a Halloween romp, walking through a winter wonderland or counting down the seconds to the New Year, Chicago’s holiday festivals don’t do anything by halves. 1 As soon as the nights begin to turn cooler and the calendar flips over to October, Chicago pulls out all the stops to celebrate with costumes, pumpkins and performances. Chicagoween is a city-wide celebration of Halloween that runs for the entire month of October and encompasses a myriad of celebrations that take place at museums, parks and cultural centers. Daley Plaza transforms into Pumpkin Plaza October 17–31 with a Haunted Village, performances from the Midnight Circus, parades, spooky storytelling and free pumpkin decorating. On Saturday, October 25, kids can strut their stuff at the State Street Halloween Happening Parade, marching in costume before enjoying trick-ortreating, circus performances and a costume contest. Across the city, other activities take place all month long. Navy Fear at Navy Pier hosts plenty of popular Halloween activities, while several other museums and cultural institutions offer walking tours, special exhibits, story times and other spook-tacular Halloween events.
