Colorado Official State Vacation Guide 2008 - (Page 36) Outdoor Recreation and More Big One Catch the In Colorado, there’s more to fishing than just catching a hard-fighting trout — it’s being surrounded in natural beauty while casting a line where the nation’s rivers are born. With so many fish-riddled rivers and lakes, anglers have an unprecedented variety of options to choose from. Here are just four top-notch experiences worth pursuing. The Lake to Teach Your Children How to Fish: Chatfield Reservoir The calm waters of Chatfield Reservoir are perfect for teaching the tyke how to lure, bobber or fly-fish. The many miles of shoreline make the water easy to access, and with more than a half-dozen types of fish, the lake promises a varied experience. The River to Catch a Trophy Trout: Taylor River The pocket water on the Taylor River — from Taylor Park Reservoir to Almont — harbors trout that could be best described as “gargantuan.” Lunkers, some weighing 10 pounds, have been caught on monofilament barely thick enough to floss with. The River to Learn How to Fly-Fish: Fall River Flowing down into a wide open valley with large peaks and bugling elk nearby, Fall River is a great place to learn the fine points of casting, hooking and landing trout. It is an especially good place to learn fly fishing since few willows will snare your backcast. This river is within Rocky Mountain National Park, so all trout are catch and release. The River to Fish Aboard a Whitewater Raft: Arkansas River If you’re the type of angler who’s choosy about their fishing spot, consider hiring a company to take you down the Arkansas River aboard an oar boat. You’ll cover a lot of ground — and yes, even float through rapids — as you cast for 15- to 18-inch brown and rainbow trout. The benefit is a stealthy approach to the large ones feeding against the banks.
