Los Angeles Meeting & Travel Professionals Guide 2008/2009 - (Page 30) Downtown’s New Development L.A. LIVE NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE ©Travis Conklin With the second of three phases already completed at L.A. LIVE, one of the most significant and ambitious redevelopment projects in the history of Downtown is taking shape. A phased development plan scheduled for completion in 2010, L.A. LIVE brings more than 4 million square feet of restaurants, hotel rooms, nightclubs and performing arts venues to the heart of LA’s urban core. The large-scale project is being built adjacent to STAPLES Center and the Los Angeles Convention Center. New restaurants, entertainment venues, broadcast studios and outdoor plazas are already bringing visitors from throughout greater Los Angeles to Downtown, making it the true center of LA. The NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE opened in October 2007 and was the first venue at L.A. LIVE to reach completion. It’s the new host of the Latin GRAMMY® Awards, the ESPY Awards, the Emmy® Awards and the American Music Awards. Perfect for product launches and other business-oriented events, the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE has seating for up to 7,100 people and stateof-the-art acoustics. In fact, meeting and convention customers are already using this venue in conjunction with the Los Angeles Convention Center. The development also has the ability to integrate technology between L.A. LIVE, the Los Angeles Convention Center and STAPLES Center. L.A. LIVE is now also home to the recently opened Club NOKIA, a live music venue with a capacity for up to 2,400 people and all the amenities meeting professionals need to stage private parties and corporate events. For outdoor events, you can’t beat the new 40,000-square-foot NOKIA Plaza L.A. LIVE. Nearly all the buildings on the L.A. LIVE campus are centered around this outdoor plaza, which features spaces for broadcasting, giant LED screens and red carpet events. The exciting new GRAMMY® Museum at L.A. LIVE also gives music buffs a must-see attraction in LA. The museum offers four floors of multimedia exhibits, a 200-seat soundstage and a 14,000-square-foot rooftop terrace for private events. ESPN has made significant progress on its all-new West Coast broadcast facility, which has an early 2009 opening date. In 2010, Regal Cinemas will open a 14-screen theater to complement the entertainment options available at L.A. LIVE. One of L.A. LIVE’s primary benefits to meeting professionals will be the new convention center hotel development. With 1,000 rooms and two separate hotels, the new 54-story tower will feature plenty of function space, including one of Southern California’s largest ballrooms. The JW Marriott Hotel Los Angeles at L.A. LIVE will feature 878 guest rooms and 35 suites, 77,000 square feet of indoor meeting space, three floors of stacked ballrooms, restaurants, spas and fitness centers. The five-star Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles, also opening in 2010, will offer 123 rooms, a boardroom for business meetings, a rooftop pool and terrace, and a restaurant with panoramic views of the city. 30 For more information about L.A.
