For as long as there have been movies, LA has served as the stand-in city for locations ranging from the exotic to the mundane. Photo: The lobby of the Bradbury Building, a famous LA film location. ©LA INC./Richard Carroll On Location: LA Is A Star Turning the city into a million different locales is what movie magic is all about, and one of the true pleasures of visiting LA is getting to see the actual locations where your favorite films were made. Finding them is usually pretty easy, particularly if you do a little research beforehand. But recognizing them without the makeup, the costumes, the CGI and the camera trickery is another matter. Consider the filming location from the first Spider-Man movie. When Peter Parker had his fateful encounter with the radioactive spider, that scene was designed to look like it took place on the campus of Columbia University. In fact, it was shot at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in Exposition Park. In the movie Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, there’s a scene at the beginning that takes place on what’s supposed to be a border crossing atop a colossal dam in Mongolia. In reality, the scene took place at Hansen Dam, a flood control dam in the northern part of the San Fernando Valley. You can see the dam for yourself just four miles southeast of the city of San Fernando near the corner of Glenoaks Boulevard and Osborne Street. When the producers of Pearl Harbor needed a movie house to look like a World War II-era theater in Honolulu, they found the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro. The actual movie theater is located at 478 W. 6th Street, and it continues to show movies daily. Film buffs will of course realize that LA doesn’t always appear as other locations. Often, it plays itself in the movies, being the fictional setting for such action-packed epics as Die Hard and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, comedies like Beverly Hills Cop and Clueless, and cult classics like The Big Lebowski and L.A. Story. For more details about LA filming locations, check out our Web site and read our story about LA hotels used as filming locations.
