SanGabrielValleyHighlights Gardens, museums and roses bloom a few minutes northeast of Downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. See the Sights • Descanso Gardens — Located near Pasadena in the small town of La Cañada Flintridge, this garden has a Japanese tea house, a lilac display, a rosarium and North America’s largest camellia collection. There’s also an exhibit on native California plants as well as a xeriscape installation. • Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens — An original Gutenburg Bible printed on velum, a folio edition of Audubon’s Bird’s of America and a collection of early editions of Shakespeare’s works — and that’s just in the library. Outside, the botanical gardens cover 120 acres, with a Children’s Garden, a Japanese Garden and a Rose Garden. The art collection is top-notch, making this breathtaking institution an integral part of any San Gabriel itinerary. • Norton Simon Museum — Pasadena’s highly regarded art museum boasts a collection with works by van Gogh, Degas, Renoir and Manet. Spanning 2,000 years of art history, it’s practically encyclopedic in its breadth. • Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden — LA’s mild climate means there’s always something in bloom at this 127-acre complex where plants from around the world coexist in various gardens and habitats. In the summer, the California Philharmonic puts on a series of performances called Concerts on the Green. • San Gabriel Mission — Spaniards founded this mission in 1771, shortly before the City of Los Angeles was founded nearby. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the mission building and grounds Monday–Friday. Call ahead to reserve space. Home of the Roses Pasadena is the place to be in early January when two celebrated events take center stage. Be sure to plan well in advance as tickets, hotel rooms and parking are snatched up well before the festivities begin. • The Rose Bowl Game® — Known as the Grandaddy of Them All, this bowl game features PAC-10 and Big Ten powerhouses in classic match-ups of college football’s most elite teams. It’s the oldest and most prestigious bowl game in college football, and the action is always unforgettable. • The Tournament of Roses Parade® — With a proud tradition that goes back to the first parade held in 1890, you won’t find a bigger or better parade. Each float is decorated with thousands of flowers, and marching bands, celebrities and other dignitaries show up to promote the Tournament of Roses Association. “Where else but LA could I live, love and eat so well?” 72 Wolfgang Puck
