Philadelphia International Visitors Guide 2008 - UK - (Page 10) GET TO KNOW PHILADELPHIA Independence National Historical Park Take a walk through the past in “America’s Most Historic Square Mile.” As the cradle of American democracy, Philadelphia is jam-packed with historic sites and attractions that transport visitors back to Revolutionary times. The best way to begin your journey through the nation’s past is with a walking tour of Independence National Historical Park. Once Upon a Nation’s cast of historic characters and storytellers, who can be found in the park, will share with you tales of Philadelphia’s rich past. An up-close and personal view of the famously cracked Liberty Bell can be had in the Liberty Bell Center. Across the street, you’ll find Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was first adopted and the U.S. Constitution was written. Next door is Congress Hall, where the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives met between 1790 and 1800, when Philadelphia served as the nation’s capital. A few blocks away, visitors are invited into Franklin Court. It features a working print shop, a museum that displays Franklin’s inventions, and the B. Free Franklin Post Office, where you can get your postcards handstamped with Franklin’s famous signature. A slice of slightly less official history can be found nearby at the restored City Tavern, where members of the First and Second Continental Congresses relaxed after a long day of nation building. Today, this charming tavern features authentic food and drinks served by staff dressed in Colonial costumes.
