Philadelphia International Visitors Guide 2008 - UK - (Page 19) ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES South Street Activity swirls night and day on Philadelphia’s playground of urban funk. Just walking down this eclectic street is entertainment enough. Make sure to stop in the bookstores, art galleries, record stores, and boutiques. You’ll also find an exciting mix of bars and restaurants in this fun and funky neighbourhood. South St. between Front St. and 10th St., www.southstreet.com ©Edward Savaria, Jr. Antique Row Stroll down this quaint street for a look inside unique antique shops, each one packed with high-quality treasures from the past. Colonial-era furniture, rare books, Oriental rugs, and more can be found here. Pine St. between Ninth and 12th sts., www.antiquerow.org Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum The harrowing journey to freedom that many enslaved Africans undertook in the 18th century often came to an end in Philadelphia. That journey is depicted at this museum, located in a Victorian-era townhouse. It features the most extensive cache of privately owned Civil War information and memorabilia in the country. 1805 Pine St., 215-735-8196, www.cwurmuseum.org Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site This colossal abandoned prison resembles a foreboding medieval fortress. When Eastern State opened in 1829, it was the world’s most expensive and high-tech prison, and attracted such visitors as Charles Dickens, the Marquis de La Fayette and — as a prisoner — gangster Al Capone. Today, the site offers tours of its extensive (and often creepy) grounds. If you want to maximize the fright factor, visit the penitentiary in October for a special Halloween tour. 22nd St. and Fairmount Ave., 215-236-3300, www.easternstate.org ©Weaver Multimedia Group Elfreth’s Alley Stroll down the cobblestone pavement of the oldest continuously occupied residential street in America and see preserved Georgian and Federal-architectural-style buildings and Colonial flavour. The Alley isn’t just a museum piece — it’s a living community where residents keep its history alive. The Elfreth’s Alley Museum offers history exhibits and guided tours. 126 Elfreth’s Alley (off Second St. between Arch and Race sts.), 215-574-0560, www.elfrethsalley.org Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau 19 ©Edward Savaria, Jr. http://www.southstreet.com http://www.antiquerow.org http://www.antiquerow.org http://www.cwurmuseum.org http://www.easternstate.org http://www.elfrethsalley.org
