Philadelphia International Visitors Guide 2008 - UK - (Page 23) DINING & NIGHTLIFE The Cuisine Scene In a city that keeps growing in popularity because of its energetic personality, the restaurant scene is making a similar splash. Elegant Rittenhouse Square is a great place to find a garden setting that complements finer fayre or cafe treats. Alfresco dining spots also fill the streets in the Historic District and along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In South Philadelphia, near the Italian Market, locally owned family-style Italian eateries serve hearty dishes in a home-like atmosphere. And bustling Chinatown is a prime destination for delicious dim sum. At one of Philadelphia’s many BYOB restaurants, you can bring your own wine, which is available for purchase at state-run stores. “BYOB” means “bring your own bottle.” There are also more than 200 outdoor cafes in the city, for a unique dining experience. The Night Scene The city’s night scene often takes place in restaurants. But if you’d rather spend your evening hours in a different venue, we have that, too! More than 50 art galleries take part in “First Friday” when, on the first Friday of each month, they stay open late. Art aficionados fill the streets, along with fun-seeking art fans, street performers and more. Trendy bars and lounges also line Old City, while South Street is a never-ending party scene. Here, you can rock to a show by an up-and-coming young band, who one day might follow in the footsteps of Philadelphia originals like the O’Jays, Boyz II Men, Will Smith, Jill Scott or rock singer Pink. ©Weaver Multimedia Group Soul food restaurants serve American- Southern-influenced dishes like cornbread, barbecued ribs, macaroni and cheese, fried green tomatoes, and peach cobbler. If it’s the sea that tempts you, the Eastern Seaboard is calling with delectable dishes often inspired by the fresh catch of the day. And finally, there’s the Philadelphia cheesesteak, a sandwich the people of Philadelphia invented and have spent 75 years perfecting. The cheesesteak starts with thin slices of shaved beef, cooked on a griddle, then folded into a sandwich roll, often French or Italian bread. The cheese that makes it distinctive is usually American or provolone, but many prefer a liquid cheese product called Cheez Whiz. After hours, you can listen to live music, head to a blues or techno club, step into an upscale martini or wine bar, or take in a comedy show or Broadway revue. The city’s rich jazz heritage is well represented by a number of old and new venues devoted to this quintessentially American art form. Philadelphia is also the birthplace of The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP), the 1960s and 1970s music movement recognized worldwide and sung by classic artists like Lou Rawls and Patti LaBelle. Stop in to TSOP’s Souvenir Shop along the Avenue of the Arts where they have memorabilia and sell classic DVDs. No matter where your mood might lead you, remember that the night is always young in Philadelphia! Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau 23
