Philadelphia International Visitors Guide 2008 - UK - (Page 25) SHOPPING Shops in Center City Center City has more than 2,100 retailers, including boutiques, art galleries, museum shops, and malls. Lagos, the high-end jeweller, was founded in Philadelphia, along with trendsetting Urban Outfitters and its sophisticated sister, Anthropologie. Other notable landmark stores include Macy’s Center City, Nicole Miller, and Tiffany & Co. Antique aficionados should browse Pine Street, from Ninth Street to Broad Street, which is the city’s Antique Row. On the famed Jewellers’ Row, along Sansom Street between Seventh and Ninth streets — America’s oldest diamond district — you’ll find an unlimited selection of diamonds, emeralds, and rubies along with thousands of styles of fine jewellry. Specialty shops, chic fashion, and cosmetics reign supreme in the posh Rittenhouse Row District, especially along Walnut Street. Browse art galleries, hip boutiques, and vintage furniture shops in Old City. Take a shopping stroll along South Street, which draws the urban fashionistas to its funky collection of shops. Malls in Center City and Beyond Center City shopping centers include Shops at Liberty Place; The Bellevue; and The Gallery at Market East, the nation’s largest indoor urban mall. Macy’s Center City, a flagship department store, now graces the historic Wanamaker Building at 13th and Market streets. Visitors can browse under one roof at an abundance of malls just outside of Center City, from large to small, upscale to discount. King of Prussia Mall has more retail square footage than any other shopping complex in the country. It is packed with 450 stores, including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom department stores. Franklin Mills Mall is a paradise of discount shopping. It stretches for more than a mile and includes such stores as Off Fifth, a low-price outlet of Saks Fifth Avenue. Philadelphia Premium Outlets, the region’s newest discount outlet mall, features an exciting collection of outlet stores, including Calvin Klein, Nike, Michael Kors, and more. The Area’s Unique Shopping Destinations Gourmands will want to make a beeline to the fabulous Italian Market in South Philadelphia. Order some gourmet cheeses or fancy pastries and have them shipped directly to your home. Reading Terminal Market, a bustling Center City destination, features vendors offering gourmet foods, fresh produce, Amish baked goods, crafts, books, cookware, hand-hewn soaps — even gifts for your favourite pet. ©Jim McWilliams The charming towns just outside of Center City provide a bounty of unique shopping experiences as well. In Manayunk, one of America’s oldest neighbourhoods, a two-mile stretch of Main Street is lined with one-of-akind boutiques, art galleries, and national stores such as Pottery Barn and Gap. More art galleries and boutiques sit alongside cozy cafes on cobbled avenues in Chestnut Hill. Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau 25
