Philadelphia International Visitors Guide 2008 - UK - (Page 7) In fact, Philadelphia is known as the “city of neighbourhoods,” with more than 150 communities and areas of interest. From the waterfront and historic parks to the Avenue of the Arts and Chinatown, a wide assortment of treasures and attractions awaits. (See page 12 for descriptions of the neighbourhoods in Center City.) The best way to explore these neighbourhoods is on foot. The streets are easy to navigate and most places of interest lie in the eight kilometers between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. (See map on page 30.) The Countryside The scenic countryside beyond Philadelphia has historic sites, family adventures, unbeatable shopping, and delicious local foods. Valley Forge, located just northwest of the city, is a famous encampment site from the Revolutionary War. The beautiful vistas of the Brandywine Valley, southwest of the city, offer visitors an enjoyable drive, plus several museums and gardens. Farther west, Lancaster County is home to the Amish farmlands. Bucks County, northeast of the city, is ideal for biking through covered bridges, canoeing down the Delaware River, and shopping in the quaint town of New Hope. Gettysburg, site of famous battlefields and extraordinary orchards, is just two hours west of Center City.
