Philadelphia International Visitors Guide 2008 - UK - (Page 9) GET TO KNOW PHILADELPHIA Modern Philadelphia Proud of its history yet eager to continue moving forward, Philadelphia keeps evolving to remain a thriving city of renewal. 1965 1965: JFK Plaza, conceptualized by city planner Edmund Bacon and designed by architect Vincent Kling, is completed in Center City. The park is across from City Hall, at the base of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In 1976, Robert Indiana's famous LOVE Statue is placed in the plaza, which becomes known as LOVE Park. 1976: America celebrates its bicentennial. Several events mark the anniversary in Philadelphia, including the opening of the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the first of its kind in the nation. 1984: The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program starts as a component of the Anti-Graffiti Network. Today, there are more than 2,700 outdoor murals in Philadelphia, often recognized as America’s “City of Murals.” 1993: The Pennsylvania Convention Center, which represents the largest public construction project undertaken in the state of Pennsylvania, opens. (After welcoming millions of visitors annually, construction to expand the Convention Center started in 2007!) 2003: The National Constitution Center, the only museum in the world dedicated to the U.S. Constitution, the document that changed history, opens its doors. 2005: Philadelphia becomes the only U.S. city to host a Live 8 concert, a worldwide campaign to end poverty. Close to one million people gather along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, for the event that rocked the future. 2007: There are now more than 200 outdoor cafes in Philadelphia. These charming and unique eateries are among the most popular in the city, adding yet another diverse element to the dining scene here. 2008 Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau 9
