Seattle Meeting Plan Guide Fall/Winter 2008-2009 - (Page 17) AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND LOCATION FOR YOUR EVENT Located in the center of one of the most environmentally progressive cities in the nation, the Washington State Convention & Trade Center has long been an industry leader in energy conservation and recycling. We continue to invest our resources into renovation projects to make the facility even more efficient. These projects have included an overhaul of the lighting systems to replace older equipment with more efficient fixtures, resulting in savings of more than 3,000,000 kWh per year. New plumbing fixtures are being installed throughout the facility to reduce water consumption. Tons of food scraps, food-soiled paper and disposable service items are separated from trash and recyclable materials and sent for composting instead of to local landfills. Although our original building pre-dates Leadership on Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification, we are currently working on upgrades to bring it into existing building compliance. Our new meeting facility at 800 Pike Street will achieve LEED Silver Certification following completion of renovations in 2010. Our long-standing conservation policies, our efforts to provide truly meaningful civic benefits, plus the facility’s beauty and exceptional architectural details provide associations, corporations and organizations with confidence they are making the right decision to bring their convention delegates to Seattle and the WSCTC. WASHINGTON STATE RECYCLING ASSOCIATION’S RECYCLER OF THE YEAR – PUBLIC AGENCY The Washington State Convention & Trade Center has understood the importance of recycling and conservation since it opened 20 years ago and has been an industry leader in waste prevention. The Center has greatly expanded its recycling, reduction and reuse initiatives and continues to fi nd ways to meet planners’ demands for “green meetings.” In recognition of these efforts, the Center has been presented with the Washington State Recycling Association’s 2008 Recycler of the Year – Public Agency award. The award “is given to a public agency that leads by example, creating programs that effectively increase recycling and waste diversion.” INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CONGRESS CENTRES (AIPC) INNOVATION AWARD This award acknowledges the Center’s catering excellence and extensive use of local food and beverage products to drive a highly successful sales, marketing and regional outreach program to increase revenues and expand partnerships. AIPC is the foremost international association of convention and exhibition centers. The AIPC Innovation Award is awarded for specific projects or initiatives that represent “innovation” such as the development of a new, more creative or more effective approach to any aspect of center management, operations or marketing.
