SOUTH LAKE UNION A lively, up-and-coming area that’s gaining popularity thanks in part to a brand-new streetcar line. REI’s towering flagship store on Yale Ave. N., complete with bike test trail, a climbing wall and enough outdoor gear to outfit the entire city. Flightseeing tours by float plane, which take off from scenic Lake Union. Urban lofts coexisting with world-class companies such as Jones Soda, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and Amazon.com. Majestic homes and regal, hilltop views make this area’s royal name especially fitting. THE HIGHLIGHTS Kerry Park’s postcard-perfect view of the Space Needle, downtown and (on a clear day) Mount Rainier. Queen Anne Avenue’s trendy bistros and shopping. Rows of stately 19-century homes featuring the style of architecture the neighborhood is named for. UNIVERSITY DISTRICT The University of Washington’s gorgeous grounds and historic buildings. Football games at Husky Stadium, said to be home of the very first crowd “wave.” Third Friday art walks on “the Ave” (University Way). Stellar collections at the Museum of History & Industry, the Henry Art Gallery and Burke Museum of Natural History. Stroll 17th Ave. N.E., a treelined lane known as Greek Row, to admire the stately mansions that house UW’s fraternities and sororities. QUEEN ANNE On a clear day, see the white peak of Mount Rainier framed through the steel-constructed geometric shapes of the “Changing Form” sculpture in Kerry Park. SOUTH LAKE UNION The first phase of the $20 million Lake Union Park recently opened to delighted residents. The expanse of green oasis overlooking the lake provides striking contrast against the neighborhood’s high-rise condos and business towers. From downtown, buses 3, 4, 5, 16 and 17, or South Lake Union streetcar. THE METRONATURAL EXPERIENCE GETTING THERE From downtown, bus routes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 13.
