2008 Vancouver Official Visitors Guide - (Page 126) Beyond VancouVer Vancouver as a Gateway Vancouver is a great jumping-off point to the rest of British Columbia. The Fraser Valley — which follows a 100-mile westflowing river of the same name — is a mecca for hiking and history. The river makes its way from Hope to Vancouver through the valley, offering good trout fishing, picnic-worthy parks, abandoned mining towns and relaxing hot springs along the way. British Columbia is also home to Canada’s flourishing wine country, the Okanagan Valley. A tour through the beautiful vineyards offers plenty of opportunities for wine sampling and leisurely drives. Farther east, the Cariboo Chilcotin region and the Rocky Mountains are picturesque reminders of Western Canada’s glacial past. Ski down snow-capped peaks or marvel at clear mountain ranges in the Kootenay region. There’s more to the south: Cascadia stretches from Vancouver to Eugene, Oregon, encompassing thick forests, towering mountains and vibrant cultural centres, such as Seattle/Tacoma and Portland.
